Lucy Lou, a beautiful black cat, spent an incredible 1141 days in a shelter in Mokena, Illinois. She was part of the NAWS Humane Society, and despite being gentle and sweet, she was passed over by potential adopters. Her long wait wasn’t due to any fault of her own. Unfortunately, Lucy’s FIV-positive status, along with superstitions surrounding black cats, made it hard for her to find a forever home.

For over three years, Lucy Lou waited patiently in her cage as other cats were adopted around her. Shelter volunteer Fran Grzesik, who adored Lucy, shared her story on TikTok in hopes of raising awareness. The video described Lucy’s long wait and the toll it was taking on her. “She waits and waits and waits,” Fran wrote, highlighting how tired Lucy had become from waiting for someone to choose her.
