Abandoning a dog is one of the most heartbreaking things imaginable. How could someone leave behind such a sweet, innocent soul, tied up, with no hope of escape? This is the devastating story of Ladybird, a tiny puppy left all alone, tied to a broken tree along a Kentucky road.
It was just an ordinary day when a driver in Kentucky glanced out their window and noticed something that made them slow down—a tiny brown and white puppy tied to a tree by the side of the road.
Shocked, the driver immediately contacted the nearby Lewis County Animal Shelter. The rescue team responded quickly, rushing to the scene. When they arrived, they found the poor pup just as the driver had described her—sitting quietly, with wide, sad eyes gazing at the road, as if she still believed someone would come back for her.
Kim Desroches of Friends of Lewis County Animals recalled, “She was just sitting there, so stoic. It was heartbreaking to see. I’m so thankful someone saw her and called for help.”
A Tiny Puppy’s Fragile Hope
Ladybird, as the rescuers named her, was only about six or seven weeks old—a fragile little thing that had already endured more pain than any puppy should. It was clear she needed urgent care and love.
But the shelter was overwhelmed, and Desroches knew it wasn’t the best place for such a young pup. Public shelters can expose animals to illnesses, and Ladybird was too small and delicate to take that risk.
“When I saw her picture, I knew we had to get her out of there,” Desroches said. “She needed a safe place where she could heal.” One of the volunteers at Friends of Lewis County Animals quickly offered to foster her, and soon, Ladybird was on her way to a loving home.
Love and Safety in a Foster Home
At first, Ladybird was scared in her new surroundings. But as the days went by, the little puppy began to open up. She found safety in her foster home, where she finally got all the affection and care she needed. The once-frightened puppy turned into a playful bundle of joy, her tail wagging as she discovered what it felt like to be loved.
“She blossomed in her foster home,” Desroches shared. “She went from a scared, abandoned puppy to a happy, playful little girl.”
A New Beginning
After a short time in her foster home, Ladybird’s rescuers found her a more permanent place at the Licking County Humane Society in Ohio. This marked another step toward her happily ever after. On January 27th, 2024, the humane society shared the wonderful news on their Facebook page—Ladybird was pending adoption.
The thought of Ladybird finally finding a forever family brought tears to everyone’s eyes. This little puppy had gone from being abandoned and tied to a tree, to being surrounded by people who loved her. And soon, she would have a home of her own, where she would never be left behind again.
