It was a regular day for passengers boarding the VietJet Air flight from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. Little did they know that two unexpected guests, an otter and a rat, had also made their way onto the plane, smuggled inside a passenger’s hand luggage.
Chaos in the Cabin
As the plane soared through the skies, a small brown otter was spotted rolling around under a seat. Panic ensued as passengers stood on their seats, trying to distance themselves from the creature.
Whispers filled the air, with one passenger exclaiming, “Is that a rat? I don’t think it’s a rat. Looks like illegal animal trading.
The situation escalated when an air hostess, attempting to catch the otter, got bitten. But the otter wasn’t the only surprise. A rat had also been smuggled aboard and was now on the loose.

Upon landing in Taipei, authorities discovered a bag filled with 20 Burmese star tortoises and the two otters. A female passenger claimed responsibility for the animals but refused to collect the bag upon landing. She was later questioned by Taiwan authorities.
Investigations revealed that the animals were smuggled onto the plane due to an oversight by an airport security worker. Despite a colleague pointing out the suspicious bag, the worker failed to inspect it. This lapse in security has since led to the suspension of the employee.

This incident reminds us of the importance of stringent security checks at airports. It’s not just about preventing potential threats but also ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers on board.
