Carol Holmgren, the executive director of a Pennsylvania wildlife rehabilitation center, explained that bald eagles are particularly vulnerable due to how their bodies process lead. Once ingested, lead quickly enters the bloodstream and internal organs, making it challenging to treat and often leading to fatal outcomes.

Recent research published in the journal Science indicates that lead poisoning has caused nearly a 4% decline in the growth of the bald eagle population across North America. This statistic is alarming given the eagle’s previous success in rebounding from near extinction. As Holmgren stated, “Environmental challenges are intensifying, and we are deeply concerned about the future.”

Hank Forester, a hunter who advocates for the use of copper ammunition, shared his perspective with the National Deer Association. He noted that the outdated concerns about non-lead alternatives have been addressed with modern copper bullets, which are highly effective. Forester urges other hunters to consider the broader impact of their choices, emphasizing, “You’re responsible for the bullet and its effects throughout the food chain. That’s why I choose non-lead whenever possible.”
