Sarah Lindgren, the park manager in Pennsylvania, demonstrated her expertise in handling wildlife when she came across a distressed bear cub. While driving through Cross Fork, a small village in northern Pennsylvania, Lindgren noticed a young bear with a plastic container stuck on its head.
An Odd Encounter
Despite initially thinking the bear was deceased, Lindgren approached cautiously. She swiftly removed the plastic container, offering words of encouragement to the struggling cub. After about 10 seconds of effort, the cub was freed from the container, saving it from potential danger.
Baby Bear is Stuck
Lindgren expressed doubt that the cub would have survived much longer without her intervention, as it appeared weak and dehydrated. The location of the cub, near a paved road with a steep incline to a stream, raised concerns about potential drowning or accidents. Despite its ordeal, the cub managed to climb a tree to recover. Lindgren searched for the cub’s mother but found no trace, though she mentioned that the cub, believed to be around eight months old, could manage on its own at this stage.
Bear Cub Has Been Saved
While the bear cub’s situation appeared harmless, Lindgren emphasized the importance of involving state authorities in wildlife emergencies. She highlighted the role of the PA Game Commission in Pennsylvania. She stressed that even though there was no cell service, she alerted them due to the immediate danger the cub was in.
Our Actions Have Consequences
Approximately 18,000 black bears inhabit three-quarters of Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. These bears can weigh anywhere from 140 to 800 pounds as adults. They face threats primarily from human activities such as hunting, vehicle collisions, and actions categorized as “nuisance activity.”
