Uncommon Commotion
After the Potter’s were done sheering for the day, they stumbled upon a sight straight out of a nature documentary! And one you would only believe by seeing the video yourself.

Does Size Matter?
The duck in the video is clearly much bigger than the rat snake, and had me wondering – would the snake have attempted to swallow the duck whole? Let’s have a look at some of the characteristics of these two animals and decide for ourselves.
Black Rat Snake Size
These snakes grow up to 6 feet, making the one in the video pretty huge! Despite their large size, these snakes pose little threat to humans and are typically around a foot long when they hatch.
Black Rat Snake Venom
These snakes aren’t venomous, which is why they aren’t a general danger to humans. However, they rely on constriction to capture and subdue their prey. Which is why this snake tried to wrap himself around the poor duck!
Black Rat Snake Strength
These strong constrictors use their muscular bodies to suffocate their prey before consumption. But their strength is used in many other ways like climbing trees and escaping threats through burrowing.
Black Rat Snake Diet
These snakes mostly feed on rodents like mice and rats, which makes them beneficial for controlling pest populations. Although they also eat small birds and bird eggs. Yet, duck seems to be new on the menu!
Black Rat Snake Habitat
These highly adaptable snakes can be found in various habitats including forests, fields, and even suburban areas. Their ability to thrive in diverse habitats makes them a common sight across much of the eastern United States
Duck Size
Most ducks measure between 20 to 24 inches in length and weigh around 2 to 3 pounds. Males, or drakes, are generally larger than females.
Duck Speed
Ducks are capable fliers, with some species reaching flight speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. They are also great swimmers, using their webbed feet to propel themselves efficiently. Despite their short legs, ducks can also move quickly on land when needed!
Duck Strength
Ducks may not be known for their physical strength, but they are incredibly resilient and adaptable animals. Their strong wings enable them to migrate long distances, sometimes thousands of miles! While their powerful legs and webbed feet allow them to navigate various environments, from water to land.
Duck Diet
Ducks have a varied diet that includes aquatic plants, insects, small fish, and crustaceans. They also eat grains and seeds, especially on farmlands. Their diet changes with the seasons, as they eat the most readily available food sources.
Last Say On The Duck Saved From A Black Rat Snake’s Grip
It is clear that in nature, no sure set of rules is followed! Which this black rat snake proved by attempting to make a meal from a poor duck not normally in its diet scope! Luckily Al intervened and the duck could waddle on happily.
