One morning at the Detroit Community Cat Rescue (DCCR), shelter manager Liz Haack heard loud meows coming from outside. Curious, she looked out and saw an orange and white cat in the backyard. The cat, who would later be named Sigmund (or Siggy), had found his way to the shelter on his own, clearly in need of help. Without hesitation, Liz grabbed a can of food and rushed to the driveway. Starving and desperate, Siggy sprinted toward the sound of the opening can and devoured the food as quickly as he could.
Welcoming Siggy Inside
Siggy’s friendly and outgoing nature quickly won over the shelter staff. Despite being hungry and disheveled, he wasn’t shy or scared. In fact, Siggy was eager for attention and happy to be taken inside. After a quick vet visit, it was estimated that Siggy was around 3–5 years old. Unfortunately, the vet also discovered that Siggy was FIV-positive. However, that didn’t dampen his spirits—he was still as affectionate and playful as ever, demanding pets and cuddles from anyone nearby.
A Special Cat with a Lot of Love to Give
During his time at the shelter, Siggy’s personality continued to shine. He was vocal, playful, and loved getting brushed. Despite his diagnosis, Siggy didn’t let anything hold him back. His loving nature made him a favorite at the shelter, though he didn’t get along well with other male cats. But that didn’t stop Siggy from being a total sweetheart, and he patiently waited for someone special to notice him.
A Happily Ever After
After several months, Siggy’s wait for a forever home finally came to an end. A young man, touched by Siggy’s story, fell in love with the charming cat and submitted an adoption application. Siggy, now in a loving home, enjoys endless cuddle sessions with his new human. Liz, the shelter manager, couldn’t be happier for Siggy, saying, “He waited a long time for the right person to come along, and now he’s finally living his happily ever after.”
Siggy’s journey from a starving stray to a beloved companion is a reminder that every cat, no matter their circumstances, deserves a chance at love and happiness.
