Overcoming adversities in strange ways isn’t something that’s unique to humans; the same applies to animals – and, in this case, a very special dog. Many dog owners will attest to their furry family members not understanding that they’re from different species; in Dexter’s case, this is even more true. This dog has taken it to the next level and now walks on his two hind legs like a human.
What began as a tragic car accident, seemingly a verdict for a life in a wheelchair, became Dexter’s claim to fame. Let’s get into the details.
A Tragic Accident That Changed Everything
In 2016, Dexter was just a year old when he ended up in a tragic accident that would change his life forever.
One day, he escaped from his yard and ran straight into traffic. He was hit by a car, resulting in the loss of his right front leg, while the left leg was left severely damaged. His family rushed him to the vet, and although he was extremely lucky to still be alive, it was just the beginning of a difficult recovery journey.
From Puppy Energy to Wheelchair Life
After the accident, Dexter had extensive surgery and began his rehabilitation. A specially made wheelchair was fitted around his stomach, allowing him to move around on three legs.
Despite his new mobility challenges, remaining a positive and playful puppy, Dexter was full of energy and showed a strong will to live and recover.
The First Steps on Two Legs
One morning, Dexter’s owner, Kentee Pasek, placed him at the foot of the porch without his wheelchair. She returned moments later to find him at the top of the stairs.
Kantee was completely shocked and couldn’t belive her eyes. To understand how he’d ended up at the top of the stairs, she looked at their security camera footage and uncovered his ability to walk on two legs.
Walking Like a Human Becomes His New Normal
Dexter naturally developed the ability to walk on his two back legs without any formal training. Although his remaining front leg is used for balance when sniffing around, Dexter prefers walking on his hind legs when moving quickly.
His vet checks his joints regularly to make sure that his unique way of getting around doesn’t cause any other damage to his body.
Walking like a human is his new normal, and even his siblings (his owners children) have become so used to his behavior that they find it odd when they see a dog walking on four legs.
A True Celebrity in Ouray, Colorado, and the Rest of the World
In the six years since his accident, Dexter has become a local celebrity. He can often be seen walking around the streets of Ouray on two legs. Tourists flock to this small Colorado town, hoping for a chance to see the dog who defied all odds.
Meanwhile, Dexter’s social media followers continue to grow. But that’s not all, he also gets tons of fan mail. He receives hundreds of letters each month from individuals who draw inspiration from his journey.
Health First: Regular Vet and Chiropractic Checkups
Dexter’s health remains a priority. He sees the vet regularly to monitor his hips and joints, and also visits a chiropractor. Initially, there was concern that walking on two legs might strain his body, but his hips are reported to be pure muscle.
This lifestyle keeps him happy and mobile, and at the same time he brings so much happiness to the people he meets.
Embracing Life to the Fullest
Despite his physical impairment, Dexter lives life like any other dog. He enjoys chasing balls, fetching sticks, and running in the park. His determination and joy are evident in every step he takes.
At seven years old, Dexter keeps strutting around and continues to show that physical limitations do not have to define one’s life.
