Sharks have gotten a bit of a bad reputation. Granted, it’s best to be cautious around these apex predators, but not all sharks have a preference for blood! This video shows what might just be the friendliest baby shark around – a baby whale shark.

A Friendly Fish
The shark in the video is the easily recognizable (because of their distinctive pattern) whale shark.
While all sharks are more or less misunderstood creatures, unfairly labeled as vicious killers, this is especially true for the whale shark. This friendly fish (because yes, sharks are fish) are known for their docile nature, often allowing divers to swim close and even accompany them for a while.
This friendly behavior was on full display in the video, as the juvenile whale shark seemed to seek out and enjoy the company of divers.
How Big Are Whale Sharks?
Whale sharks hold the title of the largest fish in the ocean, with adults typically reaching lengths of 18 to 32 feet, though some have been measured at a staggering 60 feet. Their size might be intimidating, but their demeanor towards humans and other sea creatures is anything but.
The shark in the clip is still somewhat of a baby and will soon reach a much bigger size.
The Diving Location: Koh Tao
Koh Tao, a small island in Thailand, might just be paradise. It has vibrant coral reefs, clear waters, and diverse marine life, making it extremely popular amongst the world’s divers.
This tiny island is also very committed to marine conservation. It is a sanctuary for various species and provides a safe haven for one-of-a-kind encounters like these.
Eating 2,200 Pounds Per Day
Despite being one of the largest sharks in the world, whale sharks mostly eat plankton, small fish, and occasionally squid. As filter feeders do, they feed by opening their wide mouths and filtering their food from the water. They eat as much as 2,200 pounds of plankton per day!

“Right here on the ocean floor
