Dixie isn’t just your typical pup. This bluetick coonhound from Camby, Indiana, has a heart-shaped mark on her forehead, and that’s definitely for a reason, keep reading! She has captured the hearts of many—not just with her unique talent of “praying” but with her kindness and loyalty. Dixie is more than a TV star; she’s a therapy dog, a hero, and a constant source of comfort to veterans, children, and everyone she meets. Alongside her owner, Brian Calvert, Dixie has embarked on incredible adventures that go beyond the screen and into the lives of those in need.

How Dixie Became a Praying Dog

Dixie’s journey started like any other dog’s—at home with her new owner, Brian, as an 8-week-old pup. Little did they know, Dixie was destined for something extraordinary. After a year of training, Dixie began working as a therapy dog with veterans through the Honor Flight program, which takes veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials. Brian wanted to teach her something special to show respect for the veterans, and that’s when Dixie learned to “pray,” bowing in a downward dog pose. This unique trick quickly became her signature move.

The Call That Changed Everything

In 2019, Dixie’s life took a wild turn when Brian spotted a casting call for a reality TV show about dogs and their adventurous owners. Thinking Dixie was pretty special, Brian sent in a quick email, never expecting what came next. Hollywood came calling! After interviews, tests, and evaluations, Dixie and Brian found themselves in Los Angeles, filming the intro for Amazon Prime’s “The Pack.” The show took them across the globe, competing in challenges with 11 other dog-owner duos for a $500,000 grand prize and $250,000 donation to a charity. It was an experience they never saw coming!

From Hollywood Lights to Real-Life Heroes

After filming wrapped up, Dixie and Brian returned to a world in lockdown. While adjusting to the quietness after the show’s excitement, Dixie’s real calling came to light. In April 2021, after a tragic shooting at an Indianapolis FedEx facility, Brian felt compelled to bring Dixie to the scene. At a hotel where families awaited news about their loved ones, Dixie worked her magic. She moved from person to person, offering comfort in a way only a dog can. As Brian says, “She knows who needs her.” In those moments, Dixie was more than a star—she was a hero.

Spreading Smiles After Tragedy

Dixie’s ability to sense when people need comfort isn’t just a party trick; it’s her true gift. During the emotional aftermath of the FedEx tragedy, Dixie brought a small moment of peace to devastated families. Brian recalls, “There was nothing I could say to make them feel better, but Dixie being there was enough.” For a brief moment, those grieving families had something to smile about, and that’s a gift no amount of fame can replace.

Life After “The Pack”

Even though the whirlwind of filming and traveling for “The Pack” was behind them, life didn’t slow down for Dixie and Brian. They’ve continued to make appearances around town, bringing joy wherever they go. Dixie even scored a small role in the movie “Mayberry Man,” adding “actress” to her impressive resume. But no matter how famous she gets, Dixie’s focus remains on helping others, especially those in need of comfort and love.

A Therapy Dog’s Full Schedule

Between her work with veterans, local appearances, and therapy sessions, Dixie’s schedule is packed. Brian often jokes that it’s a second full-time job—one he doesn’t get paid for. From funerals to fan meet-and-greets, Dixie stays busy, offering her unique brand of four-legged comfort to everyone she meets. And with every handshake and every paw placed on someone’s lap, Dixie continues to prove that her real power lies in her ability to connect with people.

Dreams of the Praying Dog Foundation

Brian has big dreams for Dixie’s future, too. He hopes to one day start a nonprofit called the Praying Dog Foundation, where Dixie can continue her work helping people on a larger scale. Although he hasn’t set up a platform for donations yet, Brian encourages people to contribute to organizations like Central Indiana K9 Association or Indiana Honor Flight, causes close to their hearts. For now, Brian and Dixie are a one-man, one-dog team, but their impact is already being felt across their community.

The Bond Between Brian and Dixie

At the end of the day, what makes Dixie truly special is her bond with Brian. From the moment she joined his life as a tiny pup, they’ve been inseparable. Brian often wonders what life would be like without her, but it’s hard to imagine. Together, they’ve shared adventures most people can only dream of, and through it all, Dixie remains his loyal best friend. Whether she’s praying for veterans, acting in movies, or simply being there when people need her most, Dixie’s story is one of love, loyalty, and the powerful connection between a man and his dog.
