With all the countless heartbreaking dog stories we scroll past or through online, this one is sure to bring tears to your eyes.
Meet Maru, the sweetest dog, who, if he could speak, would surely trade all his newfound fame for a different life. Maru spent ten long years tied up near a dangerous cliff, neglected but never losing hope for a better future.
Years of Solitude and Heartbreak
Maru’s story began fourteen years ago when he was just a pup. Purchased at a high price, he spent his first four years with his original owner.
but when Maru’s new owner kept him chained outside, it was a fate far worse than he could have imagined! For ten years, Maru lived on a short leash in a small, makeshift dog house. This dog house was also dangerously close to a cliff, which meant he was constantly exposed to the elements and forced to relieve himself in this confined space.
When WEACT, an animal rescue organization, heard Maru’s story, they launched a rescue mission. They were heartbroken to discover how long Maru had suffered with no one to help him.
Rescuers feared the worst as they approached him, but Maru greeted them with a wagging tail and a sweet smile. He showed no aggression one might expect from such a neglected dog. Instead, he seemed to express his joy at finally having company after so many lonely years.
Light at the End of the Tunnel
The team transported him to their facility. During the ride, Maru was nervous, but his fears disappeared when they had arrived. He devoured a big bowl of dog food, revealing his severe hunger and skinniness although his thick, tangled fur made him look fat!
A grooming session revealed the true extent of his neglect… Underneath the matted fur, Maru was extremely underweight. He needed at least fifteen pounds to reach a healthy size. His body bore scars from his hard life, he was missing many teeth and he had stage-2 heartworms.
Bottom Line
Overall, Maru remained loving and affectionate. Though he has a long road to recovery, his caregivers are dedicated to making his golden years as comfortable and happy as possible.
