Dramatic and Challenging Rescue Mission Saves an Elephant Trapped in a Water Well

Rescuing an Elephant, especially one trapped in a water well isn’t easy. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust received an urgent call about a distressed juvenile elephant that had fallen into a well and was spotted in a remote, inaccessible area in the wilds of southern Kenya. He had been there for more than 12 hours, suffering and trying to escape. This marked the beginning of a challenging rescue mission by the team recorded on video which you can watch within and at the end of this article.

Spotting the Elephant

The elephant was found alone, trapped in a muddy waterhole filled with water up to nearly the surface. It was clear that the elephant had been stuck there for some time, trying its best to escape. The elephant was almost covered with the muddy water, with only the top of his body and truck visible.

The SWT team mobilized swiftly, preparing the necessary equipment. Although they knew this would be a difficult operation, they started their mission on a positive note. The team had to act quickly to prevent further distress for the animal.

Assessing the Situation

Upon arrival, the team immediately set to work after carefully evaluating the surroundings. The elephant was exhausted and struggling. The mud and water created a complex and treacherous environment in addition to the remote location. The team quickly assessed the situation in order to rescue the helpless animal.

Formulating a Plan

A detailed rescue plan was unanimously formulated by the team, keeping in mind the safety of the animal as well as the members. The team had to coordinate their efforts precisely so that every move would contribute to the success of the mission.

Initial attempts to free the elephant proved challenging because the well was beneath the water level, and every attempt to remove the water promptly filled it back up. The team had to rethink their strategy because the mud was thick and the elephant too weak.

Using the Right Tools

Specialized tools to pump the water out were brought in to aid the rescue. A total of 3 water pumps helped the team gain better leverage, as the process required both strength and precision. At the same time, the elephant’s safety was their top priority.

After continued pumping of water, the levels came down to a point where the elephant was able to comfortably stand and breathe. The rescue team members’ operation was a true team effort. Their coordination and dedication were key to overcoming obstacles.

Finally Free

Lifting a heavy animal out of a 45-foot-deep well is no easy task. After much effort, the team brought in a supersized crane to help the distressed animal. The team’s vet sedated the elephant and secured straps around him to lift him up. Finally, the team’s effort paid off, and the elephant was freed from the mud. Everyone felt a surge of relief and joy.

Once freed, the animal required immediate care, and the team provided the necessary medical attention. Hydration and rest were crucial for its recovery since it was a traumatic experience for the elephant. Post-care, the elephant rose strong and walked into the wild, making it a sight to cherish for all the team members.
