A groundbreaking chance discovery in southwest England in the Hangman Sandstone Formation revealed the world’s oldest fossilized forest. Dating back 390 million years, these ancient trees help grow our knowledge of early ecosystems and how we believe forests developed during the Middle Devonian period. With trees similar to tiny palms and evidence of extinct arthropods, this fossil overshadows previous assumptions about the growing pains of our world’s forests.
The Earth’s Oldest Forest
To give you an idea, this forest is so old, it was around when dinosaurs were only dino-babies! In fact, it effortlessly surpassed the previous record holder in New York state by a couple of million years. Talk about leaving the competition green with envy!
The Importance of Curious Paleontologists
While researchers had initially set out to study sediments, they stumbled upon the fossilized trees by chance. This is the value of exploring new sites. Using childhood curiosity to its fullest by being open to unexpected findings, can lead to significant breakthroughs in our understanding of Earth’s history.
Prehistoric Palm Lookalike
This large family forest was overrun with a now-extinct group of plants known as cladoxylopsids. These leafy fashionistas had a striking resemblance to palm trees, though they were not related in any way. Cladoxylopsids are thought to be more closely related to ferns and horsetails. Standing tall between 6.5 and 13 feet, these earth huggers had long central stems and palm-like fronds. But these fronds were actually clusters of twiglets! This unique structure would have made this species a prominent feature of the Devonian landscape. Just another one of Mother Nature’s experiments in botanical disguise.
Picture Perfect Preservation
Now these fossilized trees were better preserved than my grandma’s homemade jams. Their hollow trunks were filled with sediment and their logs had fallen and flattened over the years. But these barks were not without their bites! Taking a closer look at their structure, researchers found little scars where branches had once attached to trees. Like markings to measure children’s heights, this excellent preservation lets scientists study the trees in their original growth positions. In other words, this incredibly rare opportunity helps us understand the forest as it once stood.
Diary Logs of Earth’s Earliest Trees
Without a Lorax to guide us, fossils need to speak for the trees. And they’re finally telling us about early forest ecosystems! Life had been much simpler back then. Unlike modern society and the more complex Gilboa forest in New York, this forest still lacked a lot of diversity. Only one type of plant ruled the landscape which suggests that early forests rapidly evolved over just a few million years. Not a quick fix to inclusivity but they got there!
The Rapid Evolution of Plant Society
The rapid evolution of forests during the Devonian period shows just how adaptable and resilient early plant life was. A forest that started as a party of one expanded its guest list over just a few million years. A monumental success for introverts everywhere! It’s likely this evolutionary branching out of species had even more far-reaching effects on Earth’s climate and ecosystems.
The Luxury of Devonian Life
Back in the Devonian period, the modern-day U.K. was part of a larger continent called Laurentia, just below the equator. The warm and dry climate of the region fostered the growth of this early forest that shaped Earth’s early ecosystems. Despite the sediment showing the first thrived next to an ancient river channel, turns out they weren’t much for water. Unlike my pampered houseplants!
Footprints Among the Fossils
But turns out other things were bugging early forests aside from the climate. Among the fossilized trees, researchers found trackways belonging to small Devonian arthropods. These tiny insects would have been among the earliest animals to take a prehistoric walk in the park. Like little kids running across wet cement, these creatures left traces of their movements on the forest floor for later generations to find.
Where Forests Fit in Early Ecosystems
These ancient forests were the original ‘ecosystem architects.’ They formed the foundation of Earth’s early homes, stabilizing the soil, influencing the weather, and providing cozy apartments for early land animals. Sometimes I think we’re so used to trees today we forget their importance in making Earth a more livable place.
Rewriting Tree History
Imagine being a paleontologist and stumbling upon a 390-million-year-old forest. It’s like winning the lottery of scientific discoveries. This find is shaking up the field and forcing us to rethink the timing and pace of forest evolution. Forests developed more quickly than previously thought, so it begs the question. What else are we wrong about?
