An escaped chimpanzee from a Ukrainian zoo recently made headlines for her unusual adventure, as well as the unusual things used to convince her to return to her home.

Chichi the chimpanzee was spotted wandering through the city of Kharkiv after breaking free from her enclosure. Her return home, however, was ensured thanks to a raincoat, a bicycle, and quick-thinking zookeepers.

Chichi, a 13-year-old female chimpanzee, escaped from Kharkiv Zoo, which is located in northeastern Ukraine. After slipping through her enclosure, she was seen running through the city’s streets. The escape caused some concern among bystanders, but Chichi seemed unbothered by the dangers around her.

A City Under Stress, A Moment of Relief

Kharkiv, a city that has faced heavy shelling during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saw this incident as a rare moment of comic relief.

While the city continues to endure difficult times, the sight of a chimpanzee running loose probably caused some chuckles and smiles – a brief escape of the daunting and tragic reality they’re burdened with otherwise.

Zookeeper’s Clever Approach To Convince the Escaped Chimpanzee to Return

Zookeeper Victoria Kozyreva, who has known Chichi since her childhood, quickly went after the runaway chimp. Being the person to know Chichi the best and probably the person Chichi trusts the most, Victoria was without a doubt the best person for the job.

It took careful negotiations to convince Chichi to return, but once it started raining, Kozyreva took off her yellow raincoat and offered it to Chichi. The gesture worked wonders, calming the chimp. And maybe the timely intervention of the rain should be given thanks as well, cold wet drops probably made Chichi miss her enclosure a little.

Once Chichi was wrapped in the bright yellow raincoat, her mood completely shifted. She allowed Kozyreva to help her put it on, almost like a child being dressed for school. This cute little bonding moment was crucial in ensuring that Chichi felt safe enough to cooperate with the zoo workers.

The Return Trip on a Bicycle

After successfully calming Chichi, the next challenge was getting her back to the zoo.

The zookeepers brought out a bicycle, and, with a little encouragement, Chichi clambered onto it. While the workers pushed the bike, Chichi rode back to her enclosure, much to the amusement of passersby.

Who would’ve thought that a raincoat and a bicycle would’ve been needed for the success of this rescue mission?

It’s easy to forget that humans are not the only ones affected by war and its effects – animals are just as burdened by conflicts.

Chichi and other animals at Kharkiv Zoo have witnessed the destruction of their homes. Zookeepers have reported that many of the animals, including Chichi, are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Escape May Be Telling of Her Intelligence

Chimpanzees, like Chichi, are known for their high level of intelligence.

Zookeepers speculate that Chichi’s escape may have been driven by boredom, as she was used to more interaction before the war. Chimpanzees thrive on attention and enjoy showing off for zoo visitors, which likely contributed to her desire for adventure.

How Intelligent Are Chimpanzees Compared to Humans?

Chimpanzees are incredibly intelligent, sharing approximately 98% of their DNA with humans.

In cognitive abilities, they are often compared to a human child between 2 to 3 years old. They can solve puzzles, use tools, and even learn basic sign language.

However, they lack the complex language and abstract reasoning abilities that older humans possess. Despite these limitations, their ability to understand cause and effect, communicate with gestures, and form intricate social hierarchies showcases their impressive mental capacities compared to other animals.

The Ongoing Challenges for Ukrainian Zoos

Kharkiv Zoo, where Chichi resides, continues to face challenges due to the war. The zoo had previously evacuated 4,000 animals from Feldman Ecopark after it suffered direct hits from Russian shelling. While Chichi’s story had a happy ending, the long-term impact on animals living through the conflict remains a serious concern.
