A fisherman spends more than 4 hours with eight to ten killer whales, as they curiously swim around the boat, putting on the most mesmerising show!
The shimmering waters of the Gold Coast are renowned for their abundant marine life and breathtaking beauty. Every day, fishermen venture out to sea, hoping for a memorable catch. However, one lucky Gold Coast fisherman experienced something truly extraordinary. A playful encounter with a pod of killer whales.
A Day to Remember
The event took place just off North and South Stradbroke islands. Bill Bain said “Then they came over to me and pretty much straight away the males were playing with the boat, having a look and sussing me out.”
“Eventually they brought the baby over to me and introduced me to the baby”
“It’s something I’ll never forget” says Bill.
According to Lauren Horner of Seaworld Cruises, the whales were merely engaging with an item in their surroundings.
They’re not necessarily feeding but playing with the fish,” she claimed.
Specialists theorize that these specific whales belong to a transitional pod, migrating alongside humpback whales, which they hunt. This is a sign that the humpback whale population is doing well.

Playful Companions
To Bill’s amazement, the killer whales were not exhibiting their usual hunting behavior. Instead, they seemed to be frolicking in the water, leaping gracefully and blowing bubble rings to the surface. This behavior is indicative of killer whales displaying curiosity, surprise, or excitement. It was as if they were putting on a show just for him.
Bill jumped into the water to record these majestic creatures as they playfully swam and hunted fish!
