Sora, a black Labrador-Pitbull mix, has had a tough life. Nearly four years ago, she was brought to the Valley Animal Center, the largest no-kill shelter in Fresno, California. Her previous owner surrendered her in July 2021 because they couldn’t give her the attention and training she needed.
From the moment she arrived, it was clear that Sora was a sweet dog with endless energy. She’s the kind of dog that would love long walks, hikes, or even bike rides. But instead of running free, Sora spent almost four years in a kennel, waiting for someone to recognize her special soul and take her to her forever home.
The Long-Awaited Adoption
After 900 days of waiting, the moment finally came—Sora was adopted! The shelter staff was overjoyed, and so was Sora. For the first time in a long while, it seemed like she had found her forever family. This was the new beginning everyone had hoped for, and it felt like Sora’s sad story was finally taking a turn for the better.
A Devastating Return
But just one day later, that hope was shattered. Sora’s new owner called the shelter and said they wanted to return her. While the shelter staff welcomed her back, they felt the family didn’t give her the time she needed to settle in and show her true personality.
The sudden return was devastating for Sora, who had already endured over 900 days of shelter life. Being back in the kennel and away from a loving home and family was heartbreaking.
The reality of shelter life is harsh, even in the best facilities. Despite the staff’s love and care, it’s not the same as having a real home. Nearly four years in a kennel have taken a toll on Sora, making her anxious and unsure. But underneath it all, she’s still the same beautiful, loving dog who just needs a chance to shine.
A Glimmer of Hope
Sora’s journey has been long and difficult, but she hasn’t given up, and neither has the shelter. They know Sora deserves a second chance and that the right family is out there, waiting to love her as she deserves.
A Happy Ending
Since Sora’s tragic story went viral, the Valley Animal Shelter has given a heartwarming update! After everything she’s been through, Sora has finally found her forever home. She’s now living in Texas with a wonderful family who promises never to give up on her. Sora’s journey has had its ups and downs, but she’s finally where she belongs—happy, loved, and home at last.

This made me start tearing up until I saw the ending.
Glad for the happy ending. One reason my Dad suggested I don’t volunteer at a shelter. He said you can’t have all the dogs I know you would adopt. I have adopted two. Some point I’ll make sure I have a place I can at least foster more of them till they find a home.
