When Mau Mau was first spotted, she wasn’t your ordinary stray cat. With her unique looks and cartoon-like face, this little feline captured hearts quickly, but her journey to becoming a beloved house pet was anything but ordinary.
Here’s the story of how this once-feral cat went from roaming a cat colony to snuggling up in her forever home.
Rescued from a Feral Life
Mau Mau, as she’s now called, lived in a feral cat colony until she was around 18 months old. She wasn’t like other outdoor cats, though. Feline Care Cat Rescue, a dedicated team that works to save feral and stray cats, found her and quickly realized she wasn’t made for outdoor life. With her unusual appearance and health issues, they knew Mau Mau needed a safer environment.
A New Beginning Indoors
When Mau Mau arrived at the rescue, her rescuers noticed some quirks right away. She had very few teeth left, her tongue constantly poked out, and she couldn’t close her eyes all the way, making her look like a cartoon character. But despite these differences, Mau Mau began to adjust to indoor life. Over the next year, she slowly adapted to living with humans and blossomed into a confident, affectionate cat.
The rescue shared updates on Facebook, and Mau Mau’s cartoonish appearance quickly charmed many followers. It wasn’t long before someone special took notice.
Love at First Sight
Amelia, a veterinary worker, stumbled upon Mau Mau’s photos on social media and was immediately smitten. She couldn’t resist Mau Mau’s quirky charm and reached out to the rescue, eager to meet her in person. When they finally met, it was love at first sight. Mau Mau, ever the sweet and curious cat, seemed just as taken with Amelia.
After spending over a year at the rescue, Mau Mau was more than ready for a forever home, and Amelia was ready to provide it. It was the perfect match.
Adjusting to Her New Home
Once Mau Mau arrived at Amelia’s home, she needed some time to adjust. For a while, she would hide under the bed, hesitant to explore her new surroundings. But it didn’t take long before she claimed every chair and bed in the house!
Mau Mau quickly showed her playful side, and Amelia shared how Mau Mau loves chasing toys and standing on her hind legs to inspect everything that catches her eye.
A Curious and Quirky Companion
Despite her feral beginnings, Mau Mau is now a curious and energetic little cat. She always wants to be near Amelia, following her from room to room, and letting out a meow if she loses sight of her. Her hobbies include napping, of course, but also “supervising” everything Amelia does.
Mau Mau’s big eyes and expressive face make her even more special. As Amelia jokes, she can go from pulling a “stinky face” when she smells something new to flashing her big, wide eyes when she wants something. While she’s not a lap cat, Mau Mau enjoys being near Amelia and loves belly rubs.
A Special Needs Cat with a Lot of Love
One of the things that makes Mau Mau truly unique is that she has some special needs. Due to her unusual eyelids and lack of spatial awareness, she often bumps into things. But for Amelia, none of this matters. In fact, she believes Mau Mau’s quirks make her even cuter. Caring for Mau Mau might come with its challenges, but Amelia wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I hope Mau Mau’s story encourages more people to give special needs rescues a chance,” Amelia shared, reflecting on how much joy her tiny cartoon-like cat has brought into her life.
From a feral cat to a beloved pet, Mau Mau has truly transformed. Her journey reminds us all that even the quirkiest animals deserve love, and sometimes, it’s the ones with the biggest personalities who steal our hearts.
