The process of becoming a mother is never easy, not even in the animal kingdom. Sometimes, lots of help and support are needed in order to make the process possible. Let’s take a look at the heartwarming encounter between man and animal as a man helps a cow birth her new baby.

Forehead Kisses

A tired mama cow receives head kisses from the man who assisted her with her labor. The new baby calf lies on the ground between its mother and the man and takes in its new surroundings. By licking the man’s arm, the mama cow shows her appreciation for his help.

Shared Joy

The man displays his joy at the arrival of the new calf and touches his forehead to its mother. With slightly upturned eyes, the mother seems to share in his joy at her accomplishment. The baby calf can be seen resting in the shade after what seems to be an intense labor.

Wrapping Baby Up

Mama cow nuzzles the baby with her nose while the kind man wraps the baby in a towel. This towel will dry off the baby’s coat and provide comfort to the baby cow while it gets used to the brand new world. The loving nudge from the mother cow seems to serve the same purpose.

Gentle Creatures

Cows are known for having a docile and peaceful nature. They seem content to chew their grass and take in the world around them. For this reason, they are seen as well-liked and approachable animals.

Pregnancy in Cows

Much like humans, cows carry their young for 9 months, or around 280 days, until giving birth. During their pregnancy, it is important that cows eat a balanced diet and remain in a stress-free environment. When possible, it is also good for the mama cow to receive routine checkups from a vet both during her pregnancy and after the birth of the calf. Baby cows, or calves, can stand up on their own only an hour after birth. This allows them to stay close to their mothers and avoid danger. Not only are they super cute, but they’re super strong too!

Mother and Baby Bonding

The first few hours after birth are very important for the bonding of a mother and baby cow. The mother provides the calf with colostrum from milk, which is great for the baby’s health. Additionally, the mother licks and nuzzles her calf to encourage blood circulation and help the calf stand. When the calf is around 6-8 months old and stops requiring its mother’s milk, the baby is weaned. This signifies the growing from a calf into an adolescent cow. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that mother and baby are separated. Usually, the baby cow lives with the same herd as its mother.
