Caroline founded Baby Kitten Rescue, a group dedicated to neonatal critical care and disabled kitten rescue. With over 25 foster caregivers, they provide essential support to these vulnerable animals. One day, someone contacted them on Instagram about two abandoned kittens, Otter and Bunny, who were in dire need of help.
Early Challenges
Otter and Bunny were found missing a large part of their front arms and were only two weeks old, still needing to nurse. The rescuer tried to bottle-feed them but noticed physical abnormalities and reached out to Caroline. Under her care, the kittens received the necessary medication and treatment, and they began to improve.
Otter’s Unique Struggle
It was discovered that Otter had a hole in his skull, with part of his brain protruding through it, putting him at high risk of infection and injury. Caroline and her team sought help via social media, and a generous follower offered to make a protective helmet for Otter. Remarkably, Otter adapted well to the helmet, wearing it without discomfort or attempts to remove it.
Life with a Helmet
Despite his condition, Otter remained a happy, playful, and sweet kitten. He enjoyed cuddling and playing with his sibling Bunny. The two were inseparable and always together in foster care. Bunny, missing most of her front legs, adapted well to her disability, demonstrating incredible resilience.
Surgery and Recovery
Although the helmet provided temporary protection, Otter needed surgery to correct his congenital defect. The surgery was successful, and Otter made a full recovery. He no longer needed the helmet and could live without the constant threat of injury or infection to his brain.
A Happy New Beginning
With their health restored, it was time for Otter and Bunny to find a forever home. Caroline’s good friend Megan adopted both kittens, ensuring they would stay together. The pair quickly adjusted to their new home and bonded with their new mom.
Gratitude and Joy
Otter and Bunny now enjoy a happy, carefree life, filled with naptime and cuddles. Thanks to Caroline and Baby Kitten Rescue, these two kittens overcame significant odds and now live a life many could only dream of.
