Dawn Firestone shares a beautiful story about a little kitten she called Rocky. When Dawn discovered him, he was in such a bad state that he couldn’t even open his eyes. His condition was severe, and few believed he would survive. Dawn, full of kindness, took him in and promised him the best life if he survived.
The Struggle for Survival
Rocky’s early days were challenging. Dawn says, “When I got him, he could hardly breathe. Every 10-15 seconds, he would gasp for air. I promised him then, ‘If you make it, I guarantee you I would give you the best life ever.’ And he eventually started meowing a little.” Dawn had to frequently trickle milk into the little kitten’s mouth as he struggled to feed. Despite these hurdles, Rocky began to improve.
Signs of Progress
Rocky gradually grew stronger. He began eating some wet food and formula on his own, frequently getting it all over his face. His determination and Dawn’s attentive care enabled him to make tremendous progress. Dawn noticed Rocky’s hindquarters slumping every time he tried to walk, which raised fresh concerns.
A New Challenge
Dawn, concerned about his movement, saw a neurologist and underwent an X-ray. The outcome was disappointing: Rocky lost sensation in his legs and tail. However, Dawn saw flashes of hope. Rocky reacted visibly when his legs and tail were gently squeezed.
Overcoming Obstacles
Dawn refused to give up and obtained Rocky a wheelchair to assist build his leg muscles. “He’s not used to using his legs all the time, so I try not to keep it on him for too long,” Dawn said. She worked frantically to get Rocky moving and exercising, hoping that his nerves would regenerate.
A Fighter’s Spirit
Rocky’s spirit stayed intact. Despite his physical limitations, he raced around the house and played like any other kitty. Dawn cheerfully remarks, “He could run around all day.” He is impenetrable and unstoppable; that is entirely him. “I mean, he’s a fighter like Rocky (the film).”
The Video
While his story is far from over, there is hope that Rocky will one day walk like any other cat, thanks to the relentless care and love he receives.
