The last thing you would expect while washing your dishes in the safety of your own kitchen is a surprise visit from a 300-pound bear! This is exactly what happened to Jason Wightman, a Sierra Madre homeowner on the 4th of June.

On a normal Tuesday evening, around 5:30 pm local time, Jason was washing his dishes as on every other day. When a massive 300-pound bear popped in through the backdoor of the kitchen, giving the Sierra Madre man the fright of his life!
There Is A Bear In My Kitchen
The first thing Jason asked the bear was if he was nice! Followed by, “You’re in my house. Get out of my house, Mr. Bear!” A very polite yet slightly comical response for someone facing a dangerous wild animal!
Power Of Adrenaline
Jason told a news reporter that he couldn’t remember anything he was saying. Which makes sense, there was a bear in his kitchen! And anyone who has ever had a surge of adrenaline pumping through them would know, you’re surviving on instincts.

With the 300-pound bear in his kitchen and his hands in the sink, Jason warned the bear to be nice. He even asked, “Do you want me to spray you with water?” when he noticed the bear was not planning on going anywhere.
Finally
In the end, he did end up splashing the bear with water. And finally, the bear went out the backdoor where he came in. Jason followed the bear out, only to notice that there were two of them.
No Harm, No Fowl
Luckily, no one – not Jason or the bears – got hurt in the interaction. Jason was just left a bit rattled. He told the news reporter that he had seen bears on his front lawn and around Sierra Madre, but never before in his backyard. Let alone his kitchen!
Bears In Sierra Madre
During the course of 2024, there have been around a hundred bear sightings in the Sierra Madre area. Three of which have been home intrusions.
What Is The City Doing?
Sierra Madre is providing residents with bear-resistant trash cans to help keep the bears out of their trash and coming back for more. The city has also banned the feeding of wild animals, especially bears, to ensure less temptation and reasons for bears to get accustomed to finding food in residential areas.
Danger Of Wild Animals
No matter the perceived temperament of the animal, they remind wild animals. Which means that they are unpredictable and potentially dangerous to humans. Especially if they are 300-pound bears! Making the importance of taking precautions for your and your family’s safety crucial.
Bear Proofing
Although these measures don’t ensure a bear won’t enter your home or yard, they might reduce the risk! Always ensure that your trash is placed in a bear-resistant container to prevent them from rummaging through it. Make sure that there is nothing, especially food, outside that might attract bears. This includes pet food, bird feeders, and leftovers from a BBQ.
More Bear Proofing
Electric fencing around your yard, chicken coops, or other potential attractants might scare bears off from entering. Also always ensure that your windows and doors are properly closed, especially during the evenings. Some people even use motion sensors that alert them if a bear, or human, is in their yard! Finally, trim vegetation in and around your yard to reduce potential bear hiding spots near your home.
Can Bears Understand Humans Talking?
Jason spoke to the bear in a firm calm voice, and it seemed to work! However, these wild animals don’t understand human speech. They are able to pick up tone though, and the calm voice Jason used might have soothed the bear without startling it.

Most bears enjoy the water! Whether to cool down, play, or hunt in. So, for the most part, they won’t mind being splashed by water. However, when Jason splashed the 300-pound bear with water in his kitchen, the bear probably got a fright which nudged it to move back outside. It is important to note that this is not a reliable or the safest, way to deter a bear!
Stay Calm
A bear in your home must be one of the most frightening situations you can find yourself in. However, there are some important things to note to ensure that the situation is diffused without harm being done to anyone. The most important of which is to stay calm and try to keep a level head, quickly assess the situation, and never approach the bear or make any sudden movements.
Exit Strategy
If you can, open doors and windows without making any sudden movements to create an exit path for the bear. Then lock yourself in a separate room to stay safe. From here you can make loud noises to frighten the bear out of your home.
Call For Help
From your secure location, call the local authorities to come and help with your situation. In bear countries, the authorities are educated on how to best handle these situations with the least amount of harm being done.
Why Do Bears Enter Residential Areas?
These wild animals enter residential areas mostly in search of food. Their incredible sense of smell allows them to detect pet food, leftovers, or trash cans for a quick and easy meal. It could also be that these bears have learned that they easily find food in the area, and come back for more. So, remember to never, ever feed bears!
Curious Creatures
Bears, especially younger bears, are very curious creatures. And they might enter residential areas simply to explore a new territory. Making it extremely important to ensure that you take the necessary precautions to prevent them from being attracted to your home!
