Exciting news from Chester Zoo! They’ve recently welcomed a new arrival that has created major excitement in the world of conservation. This is because of the recent birth of one of the rarest species on Earth and what this means for the fate of the species.
A Special Birth at Chester Zoo
On August 3rd, 2024, Chester Zoo in the UK announced a special birth. But this was no ordinary birth. It was the birth of one of the world’s rarest animals. Chester Zoo welcomed an onager foal! This birth is a big win for conservation efforts, especially given the serious situation of onagers in the wild.
Meet Jasper
The Persian onager was born to mum Azita after a year-long pregnancy. The foal was named Jasper, a name that means “bringer of treasure” in Persian. Jasper is already showing off his lively spirit and has become a star attraction at the zoo.
A Bundle of Energy
Jasper was born full of energy and curiosity. He’s been exploring his new home, playfully kicking up sand as he races around his habitat. Zoo staff report that Jasper is doing well, and mum Azita is nurturing him beautifully, bonding with her new charge.
Why is This Birth So Important?
Why is the birth of an onager worthy of such a celebration? Well, this is because onagers are critically endangered. There are only about 600 onagers left in the wild. Chester Zoo’s successful breeding program is helping ensure these amazing animals don’t disappear.
What is an Onager?
Onagers are wild asses, hence the name, which originates from the Greek word for “wild ass”. While they look a bit like donkeys they are, in fact, more closely related to horses. This is because they’re all a part of the equid family which includes horses, mules, and zebras. Onagers are distinct for their light brown coat and speed, known for reaching speeds up to 70 km/h!
Where are Onagers Found?
Onagers come from the semi-desert regions of Iran. Wild asses were once found across the deserts of Mongolia, China, and Iran. Today, onagers only survive in two small, protected areas in Iran, namely the Touran Biosphere Reserve and Bahram-e-Goor Protected Area surrounding Qatrouiyeh National Park.
The Struggle of Onagers in the Wild
Life in the wild isn’t easy for onagers. They face threats from habitat loss, hunting, illegal poaching, overgrazing, drought, and diseases passed from farm animals. Onager population numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 2 decades by more than 50%. This has led onagers to receive the status of being one of the most critically endangered species in the world. Without significant efforts, onagers could, unfortunately, become extinct in the wild within our lifetime.
Chester Zoo’s Conservation Efforts
Chester Zoo’s team is dedicated to providing environments where rare animals can thrive and breed. Chester is currently the only zoo in the UK, and one of the very few in the world, working with these rare equids. Their efforts are part of a broader international conservation breeding program aimed at creating a safety-net population of onagers in case they go extinct in the wild.
Looking Forward to the Future
Jasper’s birth gives us hope for the future. With continued efforts and support, we can help ensure that these beautiful animals don’t disappear. Jasper will eventually contribute to these conservation efforts, helping to protect this special species for future generations.
Conclusion
Chester Zoo’s dedicated conservation efforts are making a real difference for endangered species like the onager. With Jasper’s birth, there’s renewed hope that these incredible animals can be saved from extinction and continue to thrive for generations to come!
