Journey, a rescue dog who suffered severe abuse as a bait dog in illegal dog fighting, is now looking for a safe and loving home. His heartbreaking story highlights the dark reality of dog fighting and the resilience of animals who survive such ordeals.

Journey’s Painful Past

Journey’s life has been one of unimaginable cruelty. Due to his gentle temperament, he was exploited as a bait dog, used to train aggressive dogs for fighting. Although dog fighting is illegal, it still exists in underground circles, and Florida has been a hot spot for uncovering such operations.

A Chance Encounter Leads to Rescue

Journey’s path to safety began when he wandered to an elderly couple’s home, dragging a heavy chain with part of a lock still attached. He was emaciated, covered in fleas, ticks, and wounds. The couple, determined to help, reached out to Champs Chance, a dog rescue in North Florida founded by Alicia Bopp.

An Ongoing Battle

Journey’s case is sadly not isolated. Just last month, over 100 dogs were rescued from a large dog fighting ring in Florida. According to Bopp, these rescues are becoming all too common, with the shelter system nearly overwhelmed by the number of animals in need. The South, in particular, struggles with animal welfare issues, leaving shelters and rescues stretched thin.

Journey’s Road to Recovery

espite the abuse he endured, Journey remains gentle and loving. Bopp is confident that his sweet nature will help him find a forever home where he can finally feel safe and loved. “Journey is a great pup and would fit in really anywhere,” she says.

Raising Awareness and Support

Journey’s story serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing cruelty faced by many animals. Rescues like Champs Chance depend on donations and community support to continue their life-saving work. Raising awareness about dog fighting and supporting animal welfare initiatives are crucial steps in ensuring more dogs like Journey are rescued and rehabilitated.

Hope for a New Beginning

Our sweet Journey boy was betrayed by those who were supposed to protect him. He was used as a bait dog because of his sweet demeanor. They used him as a punching bag to train their dogs how to fight. He will never know that life again, as we left it behind when we rescued him. Even with all he’s been through, he still has a heart of gold and the most gentle personality. Now all that’s left is finding his forever home. Please please share his sweet face.
