Rescued Cats Flood Overcapacity Michigan Shelter

In Washtenaw County, Michigan, an unexpected arrival of nearly three dozen cats has overwhelmed an already at-capacity animal shelter. These cats were rescued from a home that shelter officials have described as a hoarder’s residence.

Humane Society of Huron Valley Describes Poor Conditions

Wendy Welch of the Humane Society of Huron Valley reported that the conditions inside the 1,000-square-foot Manchester home were deplorable. She stated, “Our cruelty rescue officers had to enter with masks. It was so awful, and there were cats everywhere.”

Rescuers Face Challenging Environment

The rescue operation involved officers navigating a home filled with trash, urine, and feces. Among the 34 cats rescued, a litter of five kittens was discovered, just days old. Unfortunately, one of these kittens did not survive.

Volunteer Fosters Step In

The surviving kittens are now being cared for by volunteer fosters until they are old enough to be adopted. Wendy Welch explained that the elderly homeowner, who surrendered the cats, was hospitalized and overwhelmed by the situation. Michigan State Police, upon entering the home, called the shelter for immediate assistance.

Wendy Welch highlighted the shelter’s struggle with overcapacity, noting that many shelters across the country face similar issues. “We can’t deny these animals. These animals need help, so we just make room,” Welch stated. The shelter is currently doubling up animals in kennels and utilizing office spaces to accommodate the influx.

Adoption and Medical Care Efforts

So far, five cats from the rescue have been adopted, and 19 are available for adoption. The remaining cats are either too young or require medical attention. The shelter is managing the sudden influx of cats, which has been a financial strain.

Welch is urging the community to support the shelter through donations and by adopting animals. The quick increase in the number of cats has created a pressing need for both financial assistance and new homes for the animals.
