Rescue stories are abundant at the Sandy Dog Rescue in Santa Monica, but some stand out for their heartbreaking circumstances. Some dogs find their way into the rescue home battered and bruised, stressed and heartbroken, dogs like little Olive, a gentle pittie who was found in the most horrible condition. What’s worse, Olive was about to be put down at the nearby Downey shelter but lucky for her, Sandy Dog Rescue came to her aid, deciding to take her in. Then they learned of her distressing story, the circumstances of which were heartbreaking.
A Life of Unimaginable Pain
What Olive had been through could never have been fathomed. The sweet pittie was used as a bait dog in illegal dogfighting; her body is now wholly scarred, and her spirit broken. Of no use to her keepers, Olive was abandoned at the Downey shelter, facing euthanasia, but fate intervened. Olive’s story is one of courage and resilience, showcasing the cruelty of dogfighting and the incredible capacity of dogs to love despite trauma.
Lactating But Deprived of Her Babies
When Olive was rescued, her body told the story of her suffering. Scars lined her face and limbs, evidence of her brutal past. Bait dogs like Olive are used as training subjects for fighting dogs, and as a result, she endured unimaginable cruelty. What’s more, Olive was also lactating without any of her babies when she was abandoned. Yet, despite the horrors she had experienced, Olive did not just hang on; her heart remained soft, filled with a yearning for affection and love.
A Gentle Soul Emerges
After veterinary at the Sandy Dog Rescue Center, it was revealed that she had been kicked in her jaw more than once. Her tongue often hangs out, proof of her past trauma, but surprisingly, it now adds to her sweet charm. The fact that she was lactating proved how she might have been used for breeding several times. Even her teeth had been filed, more proof of her being used as a bait dog.
Though her scars are visible, Olive’s gentle nature shines brighter. She is calm, loving, and affectionate. Olive doesn’t just survive—she thrives. Her quiet loyalty and tender spirit reveal the depths of her strength and capacity to heal.
What is a Bait dog
A bait dog, like Olive, is typically weak or inexperienced and used to train fighting dogs by being attacked without fighting back. Unfortunately, Olive’s story is not unique, and many people remain unaware of the prevalence of dog fighting. According to an ASPCA survey, 57 percent of U.S. adults believe dog fighting doesn’t happen in their community, highlighting the hidden nature of this cruel practice.
According to the Sandy Dog Rescue, several dogs have entered the rescue center in the same condition as Olive.
The Road to Recovery
Since being rescued by Sandy Dog Rescue just recently, Olive is now recovering from her past ordeal. She’s learned to trust again, following her foster family around and seeking comfort in their presence. Her journey is not just about physical healing but emotional recovery. Olive still struggles with fear, but she grows more confident each day. She’s been dog-friendly, child-friendly, and even house-trained—a testament to her adaptability despite her painful past.
Olive’s resilience is inspiring. From a life of horror to one filled with the hope of a forever home, she symbolizes the strength of animals like her. As she waits patiently at the Sandy Dog Rescue, she remains a testament to the enduring power of love and the hope that someone will soon take her home.
