Have you ever seen an electric ray while diving at night? It is quite a cute sight! They are the little warriors of the oceans. Join me on a fun night dive to explore these intriguing animals!

In The Dark Of The Night

Last minute I decided to join a friend for a night dive at a familiar beach where we often go enjoy what the ocean has to offer. On this particular night, it was pretty cold outside, it had started to drizzle and we were so excited to jump in the water!

Cruising Around the Ocean Underworld

Once in the ocean, we started looking around for any nocturnal animals of interest. When we happened to come across a very shy gem – a baby electric ray!

The King Of Hiding

Normally when electric rays have not yet noticed me, they will cruise around the ocean floor looking for food. As soon has he noticed me, he went into hiding! They do this by landing on the sand and using their “wings” to kick up the surrounding sand to that it lays to rest covering them. Their best technique is to stay still and covered and hope for the best. Most of the time the larger animal is just passing by and the baby electric ray goes unnoticed.

A Lesson

Here is a perfect example on how to respect wildlife. We venture into their world and their territory, we should respect the locals. I went up to him and he showed me that he was frightened and wanted to hide away. So I listened and I backed off and swam away to find some more social creatures of the night.

Wrapping Up with the Electric Ray Encounter

What a special sighting! I am so thankful for all the incredible moments the ocean has offered me. From sharks, whales and rays, I have been lucky enough to spend time in the presence of incredible ocean animals.
