It started as an ordinary day of biking through the mountains of Montenegro. We were just making some roadside repairs when a stray dog approached us. She was friendly, craving attention, and wagging her tail. At first, we thought nothing of it. In Montenegro, stray dogs are common, and she seemed like another curious passerby.
The Start of the Journey
As we continued on our bikes, she didn’t leave. She followed us for miles, running alongside, determined to stay with us. We were surprised, but she seemed harmless and full of energy. By the time we stopped for the night to camp, we figured she’d move on, but there she was, waiting outside our tent the next morning.
A Loyal Companion
She had fleas and ticks, so we knew she needed care. We took her to a local vet, where they suggested she needed surgery and recovery time. With us constantly on the move, it wasn’t possible for her to heal. That’s when we met Una, a foster willing to take care of her during her recovery.
A Month Apart
We cycled on, continuing our journey through Montenegro. A month later, we received a call. She was ready, healed, and waiting for us. We worried she might not remember us, but when we reunited, she ran to us with pure joy. It was like she never forgot. She was ready to join our adventure again.
Settling Into a New Life
Back in the U.S., life became more stable for her. She adapted to our home, slowly learning to trust her new environment. At first, she was nervous, but with time, she found comfort. Whether it was kayaking or hiking, she grew into each new challenge with courage. Monty was more than just a stray now; she was family.
The Dog That Chose Us
Monty chose us that day in Montenegro. Through the miles we traveled together, she showed us resilience and loyalty. She may have started as a stray, but she became a companion we couldn’t imagine life without. Every new adventure is better with her by our side, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
