A typical fishing day turned extraordinary for two friends, Alexander Hellberg and Victor Asplund, in Umeå, Sweden. The duo, known for their passion for pike fishing, found themselves struggling to catch anything substantial until they stumbled upon an unconventional method.

The Struggle for a Catch

Despite trying various lures, locations, and depths, the fishing day was proving to be disappointing. The friends had only managed to catch a small pike after hours of effort.

The Bloodied Lure

The breakthrough came in an unexpected manner. In a moment of frustration, Victor’s father jokingly suggested that pike might be attracted to blood, reminiscent of sharks. Taking the joke to heart, Victor used blood from a small cut on his thumb to smear on the lure.

The Moment of Truth

As soon as the bloodied lure hit the water, they got a bite. Alexander, initially unaware of the fish’s size, quickly realized they were dealing with a massive catch. The pike weighed in at an impressive 11.1 kg (24.5 lbs) and measured 114 cm in length.

A Record-Breaking Catch

This catch was the largest Alexander had ever landed, marking a significant milestone in their five-year fishing journey together. The excitement was palpable as the fish was brought into the boat, with the group realizing they had a “ten-pounder” on their hands.

Fishing for Sport, Not Food

Despite the thrill of the catch, Alexander and Victor released the giant pike back into the water, as they usually do. They fish primarily for sport and rarely keep their catches, preferring to let the fish live.

Sharing the Experience

The duo is active in the fishing community, often participating in competitions and sharing their experiences on social media. This particular catch was documented and shared, garnering attention for the unusual method used.

Interestingly, Victor recently caught an even larger pike, weighing 12.4 kg and measuring 122 cm. Unfortunately, a measurement error meant it couldn’t be entered into any official records.

A Unique Fishing Method

The use of human blood, albeit unintentional, turned out to be a surprisingly effective lure. While not a conventional method, it added an unexpected twist to their fishing experience.

A Memorable Fishing Tale

This story adds to the rich tapestry of fishing lore, demonstrating that sometimes the most unexpected methods can lead to the most memorable catches.

Looking Ahead

Alexander and Victor continue to enjoy their fishing adventures, always on the lookout for the next big catch. Their story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and exciting nature of fishing.
