Granted, almost all monkey species tend to be adorable (or maybe we just think that because they remind us of ourselves?) Either way, here’s a compilation of some of the cutest monkey species in the world – some of which you might never even have heard about.

1. Pygmy Marmoset

The pygmy marmoset is not just one of the cutest monkeys; it’s also the smallest monkey in the world. They communicate using calls that are sometimes are so high-pitched that they are inaudible to human ears.

2. Golden Lion Tamarin

These orange cutie-pies are monogamous. Also, studies show that they have a cooperative system for taking care of their young, involving the entire family.

3. Japanese Macaque

Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, wash their food in saltwater. They do this for the same reason that we put salt on our food – it helps to season it and makes it more palatable.

4. Emperor Tamarin

This species is believed to be named after the German emperor Wilhelm II, who also sported a notable and fabulous mustache.

5. Cotton-Top Tamarin

Cotton-top Tamarins are especially adorable with their fluffy hair-dos. They’re also real chatterboxes: they use over 38 different calls to communicate with other members of its species.

6. Black-Headed Spider Monkey

Their tail is so strong and adaptable that it can be used as a fifth limb for climbing and grasping – in other words, they’re true acrobats.

7. Squirrel Monkey

Squirrel monkeys have expressive faces and live in large troops, which can include up to 500 individuals. They also have one of the largest brain-to-body mass ratios of all the monkey species.

8. Proboscis Monkey

Although it might look ugly to us, the size of a male’s nose is used to attract females and is a significant factor in mating success.

9. Capuchin Monkey

Capuchins are regarded as one of the smartest monkey species because they are known to use stones to crack nuts and even use branches as clubs or digging tools.

10. Silvery Marmoset

These little guys have a somewhat unusual diet. They primarily eat tree sap, using their sharp teeth to gnaw holes in the bark to access it.
