On Sunday, October 8, 2023, Irwin’s body was discovered near a bridge over the River Avon. The river had swollen due to heavy rainfall, making the search difficult. Unfortunately, the sanctuary confirmed that Irwin had drowned after slipping into the fast-moving water.

The Circumstances of His Passing

Staff believe Irwin fell into the river while playing with other emus during the night. Although emus can swim well, it was dark, and the conditions were treacherous. The sanctuary explained that the combination of shock and slippery ground may have hindered his ability to escape.
