This steppe stretched from Western Europe, across Asia, and into North America, creating a vast habitat ideally suited for the woolly mammoth. The mammoths thrived in these environments due in part to their unique adaptations, such as their thick fur, a layer of insulating fat, and teeth designed for grazing on coarse, tundra-like grasses and other vegetation.
