David and Lisa, dedicated caretakers of a North Carolina feral cat colony, were making their usual rounds one day when they noticed something unusual. Among the familiar faces of their longtime colony residents, a tiny kitten darted around, full of energy and curiosity. This little furball was new, and while it was easy to assume she was one of their own, David and Lisa knew better. All the females in the colony had been spayed through the efforts of the NC Feral Cat Coalition (NCFCC), so this kitten was a mystery.

The Mysterious Kitten’s Origins

It didn’t take long for Miaja Jurgel, the treasurer of NCFCC, to realize the likely truth: the kitten had been abandoned there. Someone had left her at the colony, probably hoping the adult cats would care for her. While it wasn’t the best way to handle the situation, the colony cats stepped up in the kindest, most unexpected way. They welcomed the little one into their ranks, teaching her the ropes and making sure she was never left behind.

The Colony’s Gentle Giants

The adult cats in the colony, especially the males, took the kitten under their wing. They led her to the food bowls, made sure she was well-fed, and even played with her, as if she were one of their own. Jurgel was particularly touched by one tomcat’s gentle demeanor. “Surprisingly, tomcats make great surrogate moms,” Jurgel said. “The kittens would climb over him, and he would just let them play.”

Rescued and Rehomed

After a week of being cared for by her new colony family, Jurgel managed to trap the kitten and bring her into foster care. The moment Jurgel touched her, the little one seemed to melt with relief, immediately purring as if to say, “Thank you.” It was clear that while the colony had kept her safe, this kitten was meant for a loving home.

A Forever Home with Familiar Faces

Soon, the kitten, now named Hermione, will be ready to transition into her forever home with David, one of the colony’s caretakers. Though she’ll no longer live among her surrogate cat family, Hermione will never forget the care and love they showed her when she needed it most.

The Importance of Community and Care

While Hermione’s story had a happy ending, Jurgel emphasized the importance of finding proper homes or shelters for abandoned pets. Colonies can provide temporary refuge, but every cat deserves the warmth and safety of a loving home. Thanks to the compassion of David, Lisa, and the entire colony, Hermione’s future is now bright, filled with the love and care she so deserves.
