Welcome to ‘Heroic 130-Year-Old Tortoise Bravely Saves a Baby Hippo After Tsunami‘
Every creature in the animal kingdom has a unique role and purpose. It is through animal interactions that stories, like the one below, emerge and challenge our understanding of these wild creatures. This is the real-life story of Owen, a baby hippo, and Mzee, a 130-year-old tortoise.
The Tragic Event
In December 2004, a catastrophic tsunami wreaked chaos across Southeast Asia. The gigantic waves, triggered by an earthquake on the ocean floor, submerged the entire town, causing mass devastation across the country. It wasn’t just the people who suffered from this tragic event, but also our friends in the animal kingdom.
Meet Owen
Owen, a baby hippo, found himself violently torn away from his family and left to fend for himself in an unfamiliar and totally chaotic new world.
The Rescue and His New Beginning
Amongst the wreckage of the tsunami, the residents of Malindi town witnessed something unexpected. They spotted a family of hippos, including baby Owen, being washed down the Sabaki River. They were struggling against the powerful currents. Unfortunately, the passing hippos were quickly forgotten about as people’s efforts shifted to rescuing stranded fishermen.
The Next Day
The following day, as the waters receded, the members of the town began to assess the damage. Owen was again spotted. This time stranded and alone. The members of the town banded together to rescue Owen, which was no small feat. It quite literally took a village armed with ropes, boats, nets and even cars. When Owen was finally saved the town erupted with cheer. The town named him ‘Owen’ after a brave volunteer who helped in his rescue.
The Unexpected Sanctuary
Own was transferred to Haller Park in Bamburi, Kenya. The traumatized baby hippo, who we imagine was seeking solace and comfort, was drawn to another animal in the Park, an Aldabara giant tortoise. His name was Mzee. Mzee initially seemed perplexed by the young hippo’s persistent attempts at becoming friends but as the days turned into weeks, an unexpected bond blossomed between the two.
Buzzing In The Park
As word of Owen and Mzee’s unexpected friendship spread, the park began to buzz with visitors, journalists and wildlife enthusiasts all hoping to catch a glimpse of this unusual friendship.
New Best Friend
Owen and Mzee were inseparable. The two swam together, basked in the sun and even shared meal times together. Owen would often nudge Mzee, asking him to play. Mzee, in his calm and patient manner, indulged the baby hippo, teaching him the rules of the park.
Challenges and Changes
Sadly, nature ran its course. Owen continued to grow and soon he outgrew his elderly friend. Concerned followers of this unexpected friendship, soon questioned the safety of their interactions and the park’s authority eventually made the difficult decision.
Owen Meets Cleo
Owen was introduced to a female hippo, Cleo, in the hopes that they would find companionship. This also would allow Owen better socialization and improved well-being. Owen and Cleo quickly bonded and their playful antics spread joy across the park. Mzee, the wise old tortoise, seemed to understand as he watched from a distance in his enclosure.
The Legacy of Friendship
The remarkable story of Owen and Mzee challenged our understanding of animal interactions. Their powerful story also sheds light on the tender side of these creatures. Their bond went on to inspire books, documentaries and even theatrical performances. Schools used their story as teaching tools, emphasising the value of empathy, understanding and looking beyond differences.
A Timeless Tale
In today’s volatile world, the story of Owen and Mzee reminds us that in the face of adversity, the most unexpected friendships can arise. This event that unfolded in the animal kingdom still holds profound lessons for humanity. It teaches us compassion, the importance of second chances and the power of friendship.
