Undersocialized and Petrified Pup Hides Behind The Toilet For 12 Days

After being rescued from an abandoned property in Austin, this little pup spent her first 12 days hiding behind the toilet of her new home. The struggles of her previous life have had a heartbreaking impact on her. Will she recover from these previous traumas?

Hiding From The Past

This little pup found a foster home after 23 dogs were found on an abandoned property in Austin. Her new mum was heartbroken to see that the girl was frozen with fear. She didn’t move behind the toilet the first day and night, and she wouldn’t eat or drink anything. Her new mum knew this would be a long journey of love and patience.

Attempting Bribery

The puppy, now named Nyx, continued to hide in fear. Her new mum remained patient and loving. She quietly sat next to her, trying to help her warm up to her and understand that she was safe. 9 days later Nyx snuck out a tiny bit from behind the toilet to grab a little bit of food. This was the first time that she had eaten in front of her new mum. Although it was a small gesture, it was a big step forward. The next step was to see if she would eat out of her hand. Nyx wasn’t eating a lot but her stomach began to swell, which caused some worry for her mum. She took her to the vet, just to be safe.

A Big Discovery

A trip to the vet revealed a surprising turn of events. The swelling of Nyx’s stomach had a simple explanation. She was pregnant with 8 puppies! When asked when she was due, the vet announced that they would be coming any day now. Once born it was uncovered that the pups had a severe case of hookworm. Out of the 8 puppies, only 3 survived. Those 3 soon found their forever homes and Nyx became much more relaxed. She would now eat happily and was not as anxious about people coming near her. She was slowly making great progress. 

An Ending With A Wagging Tail

Nyx would happily lie down as her new two-legged siblings read to her. Intently, seemingly, listening to the story. She was still anxious and slightly scared. This journey was not over yet but the family was patient. Once Nyx had warmed up to people and learned how to socialize again, she would find her forever home. The family promised her that they would find her a family that would show her nothing but love and give her all of their attention. She would finally get the life that she deserved.
