Reptile encounters during PGA tours
Theres been some excitement brewing during the last few years at PGA tours. Not what you would likely expect… Not a hole in one, but gators, snakes, monitor lizards and even more of our scaled reptile friends.
Let’s slither into why these reptiles find themselves in these funny places and situations…
Alligator The Ambush Predators
Alligators are ambush predators. They rely on stealth and patience to catch their prey. So, these giants lie motionless, partially submerged in water, waiting for prey to come close enough for a surprise attack.
Social Behavior Of Alligators
Alligators are not solitary creatures. They have shown social behaviors. Such as forming groups called congregations. These congregations are seen in areas with limited resources or during mating season.
Maternal Care
Female alligators are devoted mothers. The are very protective of their nests and offspring. After laying eggs, they carefully guard the nest. Furthermore, they will aggressively defend their hatchlings from any threats. This includes other predators and humans.
Thermoregulation
Alligators are ectothermic. This means they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. Therefore we often seen them basking in the sun. As well as moving between water and land to maintain optimal body temperature for digestion.
Bottom Line
It doesn’t matter where you are, humans and animals will always share the same spaces. Therefore we must always be aware, mindful and most importantly prepared if we do have such encounters!
