Join us in looking a bit deeper into the remarkable events between lions, a rhino, and elephants that unfolded at Etosha National Park, as witnessed by Kim Hathway.
Unexpected Encounter
Kim Hathway and her friends were surprised when a lioness appeared over the hill. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary series of events! Not long after the arrival of the first lioness, the whole pride of lions gathered at the waterhole, creating a tense atmosphere. Kim sensed that the lions were preparing for something significant.
The Entrapped Rhino
A dramatic twist occurred when a large black rhino joined the scene. Desperate for water and relief from the heat – it got stuck in the mud. Making it an easy target for nearby lions. The situation escalated as the lions, realizing the rhino’s predicament, cautiously approached it. However, their plans were interrupted by an unforeseen intervention.
The Elephant Brigade
A herd of elephants, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene much to the rhino’s relief! Their bold charge forced the lions to retreat, allowing the poor rhino some temporary respite. One elephant, in particular, repeatedly attempted to rescue the rhino, showing the empathy and determination elephants are known for. However, despite the elephants’ courageous efforts, the situation turned bleak. The lions, seizing their opportunity, resumed their attack once the elephants accepted that they were being outplayed.
A Struggle’s End
The relentless lions eventually succeeded in their hunt, putting an end to this wildlife saga. This is just one of the examples of the raw unpredictability of nature! And truly rare to be witnessed by humans. Imagine, seeing lions versus elephants fighting over the life of a rhino!
