THE AFGHAN hOUND

Although not everyone knows the name of this eye-catching breed, we’re all familiar with it and its distinctive look.

Let's get to know them.

History of the Afghan Hound

They were originally bred to hunt wild game, such as deer and other small animals.

It is widely believed that the breed originated in Afghanistan over 4,000 years ago.

In the 1800s British soldiers brought the breed back to England after serving in Afghanistan.

The breed quickly gained popularity among the British aristocracy.

Their long, silky coats, which come in various colors, make them one of the most recognizable dog breeds worldwide.

Coat

What’s fascinating is that the texture of their fur is so fine and delicate that it is comparable to human hair!

Their limbs are often called “cat-like” because of their agility and grace.

These elegant dogs have a slender and tall build, further enhanced by their long, lean muscles.

Potential Health Issues

One of the most common conditions affecting this breed is hip dysplasia.

Older Afghan Hounds are also at a higher risk of developing cancer.

Their coats require regular grooming to avoid matting and tangling.

They should receive routine preventative care and veterinary check-ups, including vaccinations and parasite control.

Training Afghan Hounds

Early socialization, positive reinforcement, and a gentle but firm approach are needed.

Training them can be difficult due to their independent and stubborn nature.

The Afghan Hound is traditionally associated with dog shows and sports like lure coursing.

Shows and Sports

The breed has a long record in the show ring, winning many awards and accolades.

In the 1960s and 70s, these lookers were featured in advertisements for famous brands such as Chanel and Givenchy.
