The Largest Congregation of Eagles

at Chilkat River

The Chilkat river draws thousands of bald eagles from all over North America.

Let's investigate this natural phenomenon!

This river flows through the stunning and rugged terrain of the Chilkat Valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers.

The abundant food and favorable habitat conditions that the area offers are what make the eagles stay.

Ideal Time to Visit

From October to January, millions of salmon migrate up the river to spawn, providing a bountiful feast for eagles.

Other than salmon, herring and eulachonthese fish are abundat - which are all primary food sources for bald eagles.

The river’s abundance of fish makes it a prime location for eagle viewing.

Scientists come to the largest congergation of eagles to study the behavior patterns and ecological needs of eagles.

This is essential for providing valuable insights of the species.

Indigenous Communities

For local indigenous communities, like the Tlingit people, eagles hold great cultural and historical significance.

The Tlingit believe that the eagle has a special relationship with the spiritual world and serves as a messenger between the human and supernatural realms.

Eagles are considered sacred creatures, with their feathers used in ceremonial dances and rituals.

The ideal time of day for eagle sightings is early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most active.
