The Ugliest

Cat

In the World

But, as we all know, though, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Let's get to know them:

The Sphynx is hairless and has consequently often been granted the title as the ugliest cat in the world.

But before we learn more about the number one contender on this list, the sphynx, let’s take a look at some other atypical cats:

The Scottish Fold is a breed of cat that is characterized by its folded ears.

These cats are most commonly found in Scotland.

#1 Scottish Fold

The Siamese is a cat characterized by its blue eyes and pointy ears.

The breed originated in Thailand, which was previously known as Siam – hence their name.

#2 Siamese

They have flat noses and squished faces, giving them a permanently grumpy look.

#3 Exotic Shorthair

It’s a popular breed amongst those looking for a low-maintenance pet, as it doesn’t require much grooming or attention.

The Sphynx is a hairless cat that has been around since 1966, when it originated in Canada.

The breed stems from a kitten named ‘Prune,’ who became the foundation for the first litter of kittens born from two naturally-born hairless cats.

History of the Sphynx

As previously mentioned, it originated in Canada and not in Egypt, which is a common belief.

Name

Before it was officially named “Sphynx,” it went by the name of “moonstone” or “Canadian hairless.”

This breed loves to cuddle and communicate with its owners through purring, chirping, meowing, and even engaging in playful gestures like chasing their tails.

Temperament of the Sphynx

What makes the Sphynx truly one of a kind is its big personality.

They have very few insulating hairs and are sensitive to extreme temperatures.

As they don’t receive the same protection from sunlight as other cats, they are also particularly prone to skin cancer.

Health Considerations

Due to their lack of fur, these cats need additional attention regarding skin care.

Regularly bathing your Sphynx in warm water and then rubbing unscented lotion into the skin afterward can help prevent dryness, flakiness, and other skin problems.
