A whale biologist couldn’t understand why a humpback whale wouldn’t leave her side. The truth was revealed when she spotted a tiger shark. It turned out the whale was protecting her!

Introduction

Nan Hauser, a research scientist specializing in whales, was out one-day diving, as she often does, when something incredible happened.

A Whale of a Moment

All of a sudden, there appeared a humpback whale, displaying very unusual behavior. It was gently pushing her along, even allowing her to ride on its head, chin, and fin!

An Overwhelming Presence

Nan admitted she was quite scared. A colossal beast wouldn’t leave her side and, even though they seemed friendly, she had never experienced something like this before.

The Mysterious Encounter

Only later when she noticed the shark, did she realize that this whole time, the whale was pushing her away from the shark, intent on being a barrier between the predator and its prey. Thus, the whale was ensuring her safety until she was able to jump back on the boat, free from the shark’s potential danger.

The Incredible Rescue

This altruistic behavior was an incredible sight to see! There was Nan – a woman who had devoted her life to saving whales, and who had just had her life potentially saved by a whale. Truly mesmerized by the wonders and mysteries of the ocean, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Humpback Whales

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are a species of baleen whales known for their acrobatic displays and complex songs. They inhabit oceans worldwide, migrating thousands of miles annually between feeding grounds in polar waters and breeding grounds in tropical or subtropical waters. Humpbacks feed primarily on krill and small fish, using techniques like bubble net feeding to corral their prey.

These whales exhibit notable altruistic behavior, especially in their interactions with other species. They have been observed protecting other marine animals, such as seals and smaller whales (and evidently people too), from predators like orcas. This selfless behavior, often termed “mobbing,” highlights their role as protectors in the ocean ecosystem, contributing to the balance of marine life.

Tiger Sharks

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are large, predatory sharks found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Recognizable by their distinctive vertical stripes, which fade as they age, these sharks can grow up to 18 feet in length. Tiger sharks are opportunistic feeders, with a varied diet including fish, seals, birds, and even inedible objects, earning them the nickname “wastebaskets of the sea.”

Danger to Humans

Tiger sharks are considered one of the most dangerous shark species to humans due to their size, strength, and curious nature. Unprovoked shark attacks are incredibly rare, and tiger sharks are no exception. They do not seek out human prey. However, one can never be too safe in the range of a shark, and awareness and caution in shark-inhabited waters can mitigate the risk of encounters.

Wrapping Up

Evidently, this story of the humpback whale’s heroic act sends a very powerful message. It depicts the extraordinary bond between humans and animals of the sea. Even in the most unexpected of circumstances, nature can reveal itself to us, leaving us humbled by the ocean’s mysteries and inspired to be apart of its conservation.
