Blobfish live deep in the ocean, far below the surface where sunlight can’t reach. Down there, the water pressure is extremely high, which keeps the blobfish’s body in its natural shape. This environment is very different from what we see on land, which plays a big role in how the blobfish looks.

When blobfish are brought up to the surface, the drastic change in pressure causes them to look very different. Without the pressure of the deep sea, their bodies lose their shape and become more gelatinous. This is why they appear “ugly” in photos, but this look isn’t their natural state.

Pressure is crucial for the blobfish’s structure. The deep-sea pressure helps maintain their shape and allows them to live comfortably. When we see blobfish out of their element, we are witnessing an animal that’s been distorted by a drastic change in environment.

Blobfish are often labeled as the world’s ugliest animals, but this is a misunderstanding based on seeing them in the wrong conditions. In their natural deep-sea world, they are well-adapted and perfectly suited to their surroundings. The idea that they are ugly is a misconception that comes from our limited view of their true environment.
