Man fleeing Venezuela inseparable from his pet squirrel

Yeison and his pet squirrel, Niko, embarked on a perilous journey

Economic turmoil and political unrest have caused many Venezuelan citizens to flee to greener pastures

The journey from Venezuela to the U.S. is not an easy endeavour

With great resilience, Yeison and his companion endured the 3,000 mile trek

One has to cross the notorious Darién Gap jungle, known for its dangerous wildlife and unlawful acts

Gladys Canas, the director of a non-governmental organization, helped Yeison to make contact with a veterinarian

This allowed him to document Niko’s vaccinations for presentation to border agents

Now Niko has the chance, however slim, to enter the U.S. with his lifelong companion and caretaker
