The researchers found that the degree of difference between the various communities was directly proportional to their distance from one another.
The closer two communities live, the more their calls resemble each other. The further apart, the greater the divergence. This mirrors patterns found in human languages, and it suggests that prairie dog communication has a genuinely cultural dimension.
The Jump-Yip Is One of Nature’s Most Mysterious Gestures
