Residents Survey the Ruins After Devastating Tornadoes Rip Through Central US

Powerful thunderstorms unleashed a series of destructive tornadoes across southern Michigan and eastern Oklahoma on Friday, leaving at least six people dead and more than a dozen injured as residents began surveying the extensive damage.[1][2]

Three people died and 12 others suffered injuries in the Union Lake area near Union City in Branch County after an EF3 tornado with winds exceeding 150 mph tore through the region.[3] Homes in a lakeside neighborhood were flattened, trees were uprooted, and debris littered the landscape as the storm rapidly intensified.[1]

About 50 miles southwest, a 12-year-old boy in Cass County succumbed to injuries sustained during another suspected tornado, bringing Michigan’s death toll to four.[2] First responders sifted through rubble in search of additional victims, while a Menards store in nearby Three Rivers sustained severe structural damage, with skylights shattered and sections of the building collapsed.[1] Part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City also suffered significant harm.

Oklahoma’s Eastern Counties Ravaged

In Beggs, located in Okmulgee County about 30 miles south of Tulsa, two people perished when a tornado struck their home, carving a four-mile path of destruction that toppled large trees and caused widespread power outages.[3] Two others required hospitalization from the same event.[2]

Emergency crews worked swiftly to clear roads and assess further impacts, as the storms left homes buried under debris piles and vehicles crushed beneath torn-off roofs.[1] Officials noted that these fatalities capped a multi-day severe weather episode in the state.

Swift Emergency Declarations and Rescue Operations

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties, activating the state’s Emergency Operations Center to coordinate relief efforts.[2] Disaster relief teams delivered meals and cleanup supplies door-to-door in Union City and Three Rivers.

In Oklahoma, Governor Kevin Stitt issued a state of emergency for eight counties, including Okmulgee, to expedite support for affected communities.[4] Okmulgee County Emergency Manager Jeff Moore emphasized the urgency: “We’re just getting everywhere as fast as we can, clearing roads as fast we can.”[2]

Forecasters warned of lingering risks, including thunderstorms and flash flooding from the Great Plains to Texas over the weekend.[4] Surveys continued to refine tornado ratings and damage assessments.
