A woman in Mobile, Alabama, had her peaceful evening turn into absolute chaos when a live bat flew into her house— and got tangled in her hair.
She screamed. Her husband screamed. The kids screamed. The bat, for what it’s worth, did not scream— but flapped wildly as the entire family turned the living room into a slapstick survival scene.
How It All Went Down (And Up… and Around)
The bat reportedly swooped in when someone left the back door open for “just a second.” It made a beeline straight toward the ceiling fan, ricocheted off the lampshade, and landed squarely in the woman’s long, curly hair.
She thought it was a bug. It was not.
Her husband grabbed a laundry basket and a towel. The kids tried to film it “for TikTok,” but ended up dropping the phone. The bat flapped, she spun, and at one point, the family dog tried to join the rescue, only to be locked in the bathroom.
Bats Aren’t Out to Get You — But They’ll Freak You Out
Wildlife officials later confirmed the bat was a common brown bat — a tiny, mostly harmless insect-eater that likely got disoriented. These bats weigh less than 15 grams (half an ounce) but can fly up to 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph) and turn a living room into a haunted house in seconds.
Although rabies is extremely rare, the woman went to the hospital for a precautionary rabies shot, because when a bat gets that close to your scalp, you don’t mess around.
The Aftermath: Windows Closed, Hair Tied Back
Animal control finally removed the bat (still alive, still annoyed) and released it outdoors. The woman is fine, but says she now wears her hair in a tight bun every evening and triple-checks the back door.
She later told a local news station, “I’ve had bad hair days before, but nothing like this. I thought I was about to turn into Batman.”
