When Josh Row rescued a tiny Flemish Giant rabbit from a meat farm in Modesto, California, he never imagined the bunny would become a local celebrity. Now known as Alex the Great, this 28-pound rabbit has captured hearts across San Francisco, delighting fans as he cruises around in his custom Mercedes and brings comfort as a certified therapy animal.
From Rescue to Royalty
Alex’s journey began in December 2020 when Row adopted him shortly after the loss of his previous rabbit. Recognizing Alex’s calm demeanor and sociable nature, Row saw potential beyond a typical pet. A veterinarian suggested that Alex would make an excellent therapy animal, leading to his certification through the San Francisco SPCA. Since then, Alex has been a beacon of joy at airports, hospitals, and community events.
The Mercedes-Driving Bunny
Not content with just hopping around, Alex has a custom-modified children’s Mercedes toy car, complete with a button-operated accelerator he controls with his forepaw. Row, a mechanical engineer, designed the vehicle to accommodate Alex’s size and abilities. Whether navigating the streets of San Francisco or making appearances at events, Alex’s driving skills never fail to impress.
A Star at the Ballpark
Alex’s fame skyrocketed during a San Francisco Giants game in April 2021. Dressed in a miniature baseball cap, he was featured multiple times on the broadcast, earning the nickname “Rally Rabbit.” Fans believe his presence brings good luck, noting the team’s impressive record when Alex is in attendance.
Comforting Travelers and Patients
As a member of San Francisco International Airport’s “Wag Brigade,” Alex provides comfort to anxious travelers. His gentle nature and unique appearance make him a favorite among passengers. Alex also visits hospitals and senior living facilities, offering emotional support and companionship to those in need.
Life Beyond the Spotlight
At home, Alex enjoys a life of luxury. He sleeps in a king-size bed with Row and his fiancée, has a diet of organic vegetables, and prefers filtered water. His favorite treats include dried cranberries and carrot tops. Despite his celebrity status, Alex remains grounded, always eager for cheek pets and cuddles.
