When Sheila the kangaroo slipped out of her enclosure, no one could have predicted the chaos that would follow. Hopping freely along Interstate 85 in Alabama, she caused a two-car crash, brought traffic to a standstill, and left a trail of bewildered drivers in her wake. What began as a typical day in Macon County quickly turned into a story people will never forget.
From Petting Zoo to the Open Road

Sheila isn’t your average escape artist. She lives at a local pumpkin patch and petting zoo run by Patrick Starr, who considers her more of a companion than an exhibit. On April 29, Sheila found an opening and made a break for it—heading straight toward one of the busiest highways in the region. Her unexpected appearance on I-85 stunned drivers, and in the scramble to avoid hitting her, two vehicles collided. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
A Kangaroo in Traffic

Motorists couldn’t believe their eyes. Hopping across lanes and stopping cars in their tracks, Sheila moved with a calm confidence that only added to the surreal nature of the scene. Videos captured by witnesses quickly went viral, showing the kangaroo bounding through traffic like something out of a movie. While she appeared curious and unafraid, her presence created a dangerous situation. Officers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency responded quickly, working with Starr to get her to safety.
Rescue on the Highway

Sheila’s adventure came to an end when authorities and her owner successfully tranquilized her. She was then taken to Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine for evaluation. Aside from being a little dehydrated, she was in good health and ready to return home. Starr, relieved and emotional, described Sheila as “part of the family.” For him, the event was both terrifying and eye-opening.
A Sheriff’s Surprise

Macon County Sheriff André Brunson was among those stunned by the day’s events. “We’ve had bears before, but never a kangaroo,” he told local media. For residents, the kangaroo-on-the-loose became the talk of the town—equal parts alarming and amusing. Though some joked about the incident, many were left wondering how something like this could happen in the first place.
A Bigger Conversation About Wild Pets

Sheila’s story has sparked a broader discussion about keeping wild animals as personal pets. Animal welfare groups like Humane World for Animals expressed concern, citing Sheila as the third kangaroo to escape in Alabama in just four years. Experts warn that even well-cared-for exotic animals can pose unexpected risks to both the public and themselves if not managed with proper safeguards.
Back Where She Belongs

After her brief moment of highway fame, Sheila is back at the pumpkin patch where she belongs. Patrick Starr says he’s reviewing his enclosure setup to make sure she stays safe—and in place. Though her escape caused panic, it also sparked laughter, learning, and a reminder: even in Alabama, you just might hit traffic because of a kangaroo.
