When Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock took their miniature dachshund, Valerie, on a camping trip to Kangaroo Island, they had no idea they were about to begin a year-and-a-half-long journey of heartbreak, hope, and incredible resilience. After escaping from her playpen, Valerie vanished into the wild—and somehow survived 529 days alone, until the impossible happened: she was brought back home.
From Princess to Survivor
Valerie wasn’t built for the wild. Known as a spoiled “princess” back home, she lived a life of comfort before she suddenly found herself lost in rugged Australian bushland. Despite intense initial search efforts, she disappeared without a trace, and her owners were left devastated, unsure if they’d ever see her again.
Clinging to Hope Through Sightings
Months after she went missing, locals on Kangaroo Island started reporting sightings of a small black dog with a pink collar. Each report brought renewed hope. Valerie had somehow made it through the worst—dodging snakes, eagles, wild weather, and isolation—surviving by scavenging roadkill and drinking from dams.
Rescue Fueled by Determination
Kangala Wildlife Rescue, led by Jared and Lisa Karran, took on the mission to bring Valerie home. Over 1,000 volunteer hours and 3,000 miles were logged as the team tracked her across the island. With the help of familiar scents and her favorite toys, they set a humane trap. Finally, after days of careful planning, Valerie stepped into safety.
The Moment She Came Home
Once captured, Valerie was examined and found to be surprisingly healthy. The moment she heard her name, she wagged her tail—recognizing the voices that had once been part of her everyday life. She was fitted with a secure harness and began her slow journey back to domestic life, starting with a decompression period to adjust after so long in the wild.
A Bond That Never Broke
Despite the months apart, Valerie hadn’t forgotten her family. Her reunion with Georgia and Josh was emotional and full of tail wags and tears. It was clear she still knew where she belonged. The couple called it nothing short of a miracle and praised the rescuers who refused to give up.
Valerie’s Legacy of Hope
Valerie’s story isn’t just about a lost dog. It’s a reminder of the unbreakable connection between animals and the people who love them. Against all odds, this tiny dachshund survived over a year in the wilderness—and made it home. Her journey has become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of never giving up.
