The Axolotl

Meet the axolotl, a salamander that looks like it stepped right out of a cartoon (Pokémon maybe?). These aquatic creatures can regenerate lost body parts, including their brain! Native to Mexico City’s lake complex, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution.

Imagine a frog that spends most of its life underground and only emerges for a few days each year to mate. That’s the purple frog for you! This oddball amphibian, found in India, has a lineage dating back 130 million years making one think of it as a living fossil. Its pig-like snout helps it slurp up termites and ants it finds in its habitat.

As the world’s largest amphibian, the Chinese giant salamander can grow up to almost 6 feet long. These gentle giants breathe through their skin and can live up to 60 years. Sadly, they’re critically endangered due to habitat loss and overharvesting for traditional medicine.
