Portal, Arizona – Deep in the mesquite desert, a remarkable interspecies partnership unfolded where tiny cone ants climbed into the gaping mandibles of much larger harvester ants to groom them.[1][2] Researchers documented this behavior nearly two decades ago at the Southwestern Research Station, revealing the first known example of so-called cleaner ants in action. He stood behind Quailway Cottage at the station, coordinates 31.879, −109.060, watching Pogonomyrmex barbatus workers, known as Pogos to myrmecologists, emerge from their nests. Several Pogos froze in rigid postures near nest entrances of smaller Dorymyrmex ants, an undescribed species close to D. medeis.[1]
Moffett captured images over the days, noting at least 90 inspections. Activity peaked at sunrise before 9 a.m., as temperatures rose. The site featured a cleared pan around nests, involving multiple colonies of both species. This documentation waited until April 2026 for formal publication in Ecology and Evolution.[1]
The Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
Pogonomyrmex barbatus workers positioned themselves stiffly high on their legs, often with gasters lifted and mandibles agape, just centimeters from Dorymyrmex nest entrances. Within a minute, cone ants emerged to climb aboard. They licked surfaces, such as near the eyes, nipped or pulled at the integument, and explored between the open jaws.[2]
Sessions lasted from seconds to over five minutes in observed cases. Up to five cleaners gathered on one client ant. Harvesters showed restraint, never biting back, even as cleaners moved between adjacent Pogos. Some clients backed directly into cone ant nests to solicit service. Interactions ended abruptly when the Pogo jolted away, sometimes flipping upside down to dislodge the team.[1]
What Drives This Symbiotic Tolerance?
Biologists have proposed several explanations for the behavior’s benefits. The cone ants may remove pathogens from hard-to-reach areas, outsourcing grooming for the harvesters. Alternatively, interactions could exchange beneficial microbes, improving microbiomes for one or both species.[1]
Other ideas include transfer of antifungal substances from Dorymyrmex, nutritional gains from lipid-rich skin secretions, or pheromone exchange to reduce aggression. Dead Pogos received cursory inspections but no full cleaning, ruling out scavenging. No food exchanges or ectoparasites appeared in observations. Future studies could use dyes or microbiome analysis to test these hypotheses.

In ants, similar grooming occurs with parasitic insects, but interspecies ant cleaning remained undocumented until now. The publication prompts calls for metagenomic sequencing and exclusion experiments to quantify gains. Observations confirm no trophallaxis or food begging took place.
